Irrigation is the act of artificially applying water to allow plants grow. This is particularly important in during periods on low to no rainfalls. It significantly increases yields as it allows the farmer grow in every season of the year and can be applied to any crop.
Drip irrigation is an irrigation method that saves water and fertilizers by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants, either onto the soil surface or directly onto the root zone, through a network of valves, pipes, tubing and emitters. It is done through narrow tubes that deliver water directly to the base of the plant.
Benefits
- Conserves Water: Almost no water is lost through surface runoff or evaporation.
- Soil particles have plenty of opportunity to absorb and hold water for plants.
- Prevents Nutrients Leaching: It also means very few nutrients leach down beyond the reach of plant roots.
- Discourages Weeds: Since drip irrigation delivers water directly to the plants you want to grow, less is wasted on weeds. The soil surface between the plants also remains drier, which discourages weed seeds from sprouting.
- Gives Better Control: Drip irrigation also gives farmers much better control of their crops as they determine when and what amount of water the plants get.
- Prevents Overwatering During Rainfalls: In combination with mulching, drip irrigation could be applied during period of intense rainfall to ensure that plants are not over watered.
Sprinkler Irrigation: This is a method of irrigation similar to rainfall. Water is distributed through a system of pipes usually by pumping. It is then sprayed into the air and irrigate entire soil surface through spray heads so that it breaks up into small water drops which fall to the ground. Sprinkler irrigation systems are typically best suited for row, field and tree crops that are grown closely together. Good for lawns, grains, leafy vegetables and tree crops.
